Kentucky HVAC Journeyman Practice Exam

In HVAC systems, it is essential that the pressure classification of ducts is designed to safely handle the pressures involved in air distribution. The correct answer indicates that the pressure classification must be greater than the design pressure of the air distribution system. This ensures that the ducts can accommodate the maximum expected pressure without failure or leakage.

When ducts are rated for a higher pressure than what they will experience in operation, it provides a safety margin that accounts for potential fluctuations in pressure due to changes in airflow or system performance. This is crucial for maintaining efficiency, preventing duct damage, and ensuring the longevity of the HVAC system.

Choosing a pressure classification that is equal to the design pressure would not provide that necessary margin for safety and reliability, possibly leading to system failures. Similarly, having a lower pressure classification would expose the system to risks such as duct collapse or compromised air delivery, which can impact comfort and indoor air quality. Thus, the requirement for ducts to be rated greater than the design pressure is a fundamental principle in HVAC design to avoid these issues.
